From Margaret Angelini, Executive Director, Old West Organ Society. “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”--Leonard Bernstein After the tragic events at the Boston Marathon this year, I was heartened to see so many people pull together to care for the wounded, catch the suspects, and comfort one another in the midst of the chaos, all while refusing to rush to judgment about the causes of the violence. We at the Society hope that this message finds you in a better place now than we were in two weeks ago, and we wish you solace and strength as we all go forward. Very soon the Society will offer two concerts. The first is on Friday, May 10 at 8pm, and will be given by Matthias Jakob, organist of the Peace Church in Pottsdam, Germany. His program is rich with uplifting music, including the works of Bach, Frescobaldi, Messaien, Buxtehude, Reger and Mendelssohn. You may learn more about him by reading his biography here, and more specifics about the pieces he will perform by looking up his program here. It has been a long time since Op. 55 has joined the musical offerings of the http://www.bemf.org/index.html Boston Early Music Festival. We’re back in the Festival this year, presenting a fringe concert on Wednesday, June 12 at 4:30pm. Matthias Havinga will offer a recital inspired by the theme of the Festival, which is “Youth - Genius and Folly.” You may learn more about him and his program here. But wait, there’s more! The free Summer Series begins one month after the Festival, and here is the schedule. As in the past, you will receive your summer program in the mail a few weeks before the concerts are scheduled to begin. Make sure your address is up to date with us! The Annual Meeting of the Society will start at 6pm on July 9 at the church, before the first concert of the summer. There will be much to report about the doings of the Board of Directors in the past year, and all are invited to attend. As always, we appreciate your presence and your support. It is always a joy to see you at concerts, and your financial support makes all this possible. Keep spreading the word about the solace, strength, and solidarity that brings you to Old West; that is how our reply of goodness in the face of violence will bear fruit in the city we love so much. See you at Old West! Margaret Validated parking at the Charles River Parking Garage at 175 Cambridge St. is available for both events, and the Old West Church is handicap accessible.
